Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. The lungs are made up of small air sacs called alveoli, which fill with air when a healthy person breathes. In pneumonia, the alveoli fill with pus and fluid, making breathing painful and limiting oxygen intake.
Pneumonia is the leading cause of death from infection among children worldwide. In 2017, pneumonia killed an estimated 808,694 children under the age of five, accounting for 15 percent of all under-five deaths. Pneumonia affects children and families everywhere, but is most prevalent in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Children can be protected from pneumonia, which can be prevented with simple interventions and treated with low-cost, low-tech drugs and medical care.
