Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus develop mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without specialized treatment. But some people may become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older adults and those with underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease or cancer are more likely to develop severe disease. Anyone at any age can get sick, seriously ill or die.
The best way to prevent and slow the spread is to fully understand the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by maintaining a distance of at least 1 metre from others, wearing a suitable mask, and washing your hands frequently or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Get vaccinated when it's your turn and follow local instructions.
When an infected person coughs or sneezes, talks, sings, or breathes, the virus is passed out of the mouth or nose as liquid particles. These particles range from larger droplets to smaller aerosols. Respiratory etiquette should be observed for this, such as coughing into a bent elbow. If you feel unwell, you should self-isolate at home until you recover.
