Pepsinogen I is secreted by the chief cells and mucus neck cells in the fundus of the stomach, and pepsinogen II throughout the stomach and proximal duodenum. A decrease in serum levels of pepsinogen I and in the I/II ratio has been shown to be a good measure of gastric atrophy.
