NT-proBNP

NT-proBNP is the precursor of N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide. The heart not only has the function of pumping blood, but also has the function of endocrine. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is secreted by the ventricle and released into the blood. In patients with heart failure, BNP secretion increases due to increased ventricular pressure due to volume overload. After being stimulated by cardiomyocytes, BNP is cleaved into NT-proBNP and released into the blood under the action of protease. The concentration of NT-proBNP can be detected in the blood to reflect the degree of heart failure.
